Lower models and a limited edition variant came to the picture a year later from its original release. New Renault SELECTION Showroom at Airton Road

Renault Group Ireland recently has launched its new used car programme Renault SELECTION at selected Renault and Dacia dealerships nationwide, writes Trish Whelan.

Renault says the programme offers customers a new standard in use cars, with a minimum of two years’ warranty together with two years’ roadside assistance on used Renault or Dacia models up to six years old, as well as a full vehicle history check for every car.

The first standalone Renault SELECTION showroom has just been opened by Renault Retail group Belgard on the Airton Road in Tallaght.

At the new showroom, customers will be offered a big selection of used Renault and Dacia models priced from €7,995. “The Airton Road showrrom offers a ‘Buy Today - Drive Today’ standard which ensures customers receive only the highest-quality product.”

To help potential used car customers, and to make the purchase more seamless, the Airton Road showroom will work closely with Renault Bank to tailor a finance package with an offer of special opening rates from 1.72 per cent APR.

To celebrate the opening, the showroom will offer a welcome gift in the run up to Christmas and all customers who purchase a used car before 30 November 2017 will be entered into a weekly draw to win €2,000.

Vehicle Overview
Marketed as a crossover SUV, the Soul targeted young buyers due to its bold styling and had attracted buyers to the Korean marque. Locally, it slotted above the Rio but p ositioned together with the Forte, another compact from the brand.

First model releases have a 2.0 engine which are available in both manual or automatic transmissions which offers decent city driving acceleration but driving at highway speeds will reward you with a noisy engine. Replacing it is a 1.6 engine that has the same characteristics of the larger engine but on a fuel efficient package but is only available with an automatic. Since this vehicle is heavy, handling through corners and suspension capability defies the weight. Ride quality isnt great and road imperfections make things worse and rear visibility is poor due to the exterior design.

1.6 and 2.0 LX models wear a black interior scheme while 2.0 EX have theirs which match the exterior color. Controls are within the reach of the driver, a good thing since it is elevated. Another plus is a roomy cabin for all passengers.

What Should I Get
Launched in August 2009, the So ul was first available with a 2.0 engine. The base model is the LX that has the 142hp 2.0 engine, dual airbags, ABS brakes, fog lamps, rear spoiler, 60/40 fold rear seat, all power features, CD player with auxiliary and USB, alarm, keyless entry, and steering wheel audio controls. The top end EX adds roof rails, sun roof, stability control, and rear parking sensors. An updated model arrived in May 2010 which sported a different door handle design and a 1.6 engine that had the upper engine being discontinued in the same year. Apart from a smaller engine (122hp from 2010 to 2012 while June 2012 to later get 128hp), it is downgraded as items such as a drivers airbag, all power features, rear parking sensors, 60/40 fold rear seat, CD player with auxiliary and USB, alarm, and keyless entry. June 2012 had an upgrade to a six speed automatic and telescopic steering wheel, apart from a power increase.

How Much Would It Cost Me
Not much problems were reported es pecially that this vehicle didnt sell much so expect this vehicle to be reliable. A 2010 recall was issued for EX models regarding the wiring system of the speaker lights, which must be inspected if that inspection had been done.

Hybrid Mondeo on the way to Ireland

The hybrid version of Fords Mondeo is going on sale here for the 181 market period, offering an alternative to the dominant diesel powertrain, writes Brian Byrne.

The car features a 2.0 petrol engine and electric motor combination, with a combined power output of 234hp.

The transmission is a CVT automatic. The claimed fuel consumption is 3.9L/100km or 72.4mpg equivalent, and the cars acceleration to 100km/h is 9.2s.

The price for Ireland has not yet been finalised, but is expected to be in excess of €32,000.

There has been no perceived shift from diesel to petrol preference in the Mondeo or Kuga models, Ford Ireland MD Ciaran McMah on said this week.

However, speaking at the international launch of the substantially revised EcoSport small SUV in Lisbon, he noted that some 30pc of Focus orders are now petrol, a doubling of the penetration compared to last year.

And he said that he expects to see a big increase in the number of hybrid cars coming on the market over the next year.

New Renault Koleos

Renault Group’s 181 offers have been designed to reduce the cost of ownership over three years, writes Trish Whelan.

Available now across the Group’s network of 28 dealerships, the 181 Renault PC offer includes 3pc APR PCP finance, 3 years’ servicing included and 3 years’ road tax on all cars ordered and registered before 31 January 2018.

The straight-forward offer applies to all cars across the range - the new Koleos, Megane range including the New Megane Sport Tourer and New Megane Grand Coupe; New Scenic, New Grand Scenic, New Clio and Kadjar and Captur crossovers.

Renault is offering 0pc HP finance on the zero emissions 100pc electric ZOE which has the longest range of any mainstream electric vehicle, an estimated 300km in real-life driving conditions,.

Renault’s van range of Master, Trafic and Kangoo, Renault Pro+ dealers are offering 3pc APR HP over 60 months on all orders taken and registered before 31 January 2018.

Dacia, which celebrates five years in Ireland, is offering zero deposit and 4.9pc APR on PCP with Dacia Bank across the range for 181 including new facelifted Duster, Sandero, Stepway and new Logan MCV Stepway.

These offers are available through Renault Bank offering customers lower interest rates and further savings versus high street commercial banks. A Renault Bank branch is available in all 28 Renault dealerships, offering 2-hour decision times and approval rates of 80pc.

Renault Open Week will take place from 20-25 November, and for every test drive completed in the 28 dealerships during this period, dealers will donate €5 to Renault’s charity partner Pieta House. Renault Ireland will then match the amount raised by the network.

MID-SIZE SUV BEST BARGAIN: 2004-2011 Ford Everest

My pick in the used car market is something from the Blue Oval and not from the T enclosed in a circle or a three diamond brands. What makes it a great buy? Low prices, great looks and stance, decent pull from the CRDi engine, and read, a water-proof ECU. Downsides are the interior quality and a limited third row space, but you wont be complaining at these bargain prices right?

Other bets:
2005-2011 Toyota Fortuner - Timeless design, Toyota reliability, robust engines and drivetrains, and with most units selling in the six digit range; the once popular SUV in the market can be now yours for less. Just be careful with earlier models possessing the 2.5 2KD-FTV diesel in which they suddenly shut down due to the fuel quality we have. For those who dont want the tagtag make sure to check the 2009 and later models.

2005-2011 Mitsubishi Montero Sport - New or used, this is one pick, but it only applies to the 2008 and later second generation models. Going to the first one sold between 2005 to 2008, there is nothing wrong with this one, but nothing spectacular to begin with. It has tons of space and a fuel efficient diesel motor, but headroom can be a problem and only seats five. The second one has oodles of power, presence, numerous standard equipment, and importantly, availability in the used car market.

2006-2011 Hyundai Santa Fe - Hate your ride harsh? This is for you. Riding in a car based platform, it drives like a car, but does not want to be driven on corners. While the diesel engines are the one to get, the 2.4 (available from 2010-2012) has decent pull while the 2.7 V6 has lukewarm performance. For more fun behind the wheel, do yourself a favor by purchasing a 2010 and later unit. They have their engines upgraded which showcased the "R" series Piezo injectors and ,importantly, an electronically controlled variable-geometry turbocharger.

2005-2011 Isuzu Alterra - Always being left behind in the shopping lists of mid-size SUV buyers. The Alterra has several advantages that can put the salable competitors to shame; like the top-fuel efficiency, a smooth ride, a standard entertainment system, and a revelation, a manual transmission paired to a 4JJ1 3.0 diesel. Noise insulation is a weakness but for those prioritizing economy and space, this is the one.

2003-2011 Kia Sorento - Another Korean in the list (we cant place the Mohave and Veracruz since they fail the used car market criteria). In this case, the Sorento is a good buy for different reasons. Getting a first generation model for the reasons of affordability, off road capability, fuel efficiency and space; while style and fuel savings (for a bit) are some compelling whys to buy the second generation model. Just vanish the old Kia quality.

2002-2011 Mitsubishi Pajero - The epitome of status and class in the Philippines. In this case, you will encompass three generations of Pajeros and lets start with the Field Master, sold until 2008. Second is the BK model which was available from 2003-2007 and the one marketed up to now is the fourth generation model. Youll get that image and projection with either of the three variants listed down, just make sure to stay away from converted units.

2005-2011 Ford Explorer - If American is the call, then the Explorer is the top pick in the crop of used Yankee SUVs. So why did I choose this one? Enough room, adequate pull (although this one is very old), looks, a laundry list of standard amenities, and presence. Prices are now flirting in the six digit range so this is a steal. Just remember that dont expect diesel SUV like figures.

2002-2011 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - The baby Land Cruiser; you get the image and performance (although this is less) similar to the bigger brother. Prices are less but do remember of this: 2003-2005 models have a 4.0 V6 model, which is rare and thus, you wont be finding for one. There is a manual variant but if you are going to use this as a daily driver, get the automatic.

LARGE SUV BEST BARGAIN: 2002-2011 Toyota Land Cruiser
Among the limited options, the Land Cruiser is the top pick for many reasons. You get the space, you get outstanding performance (especially the 1VD 4.5 V8 diesel is mouthwatering), you get the pace, and most of all, the assistance of four wheel drive when you need it. Remember to take driving lessons to get used to its sheer size.

Other bet:
2002-2011 Nissan Patrol - Thinking the LCs size too large for your everyday needs, just slightly small in length and width, the Patrol is for you. Trusted by hundreds of businessmen, politicians, and those in the PSG for decades. Making it unchanged for years is a testament to great reliability. Avoid the earlier models (2001-2002) since they had turbo injector problems. The diesel automatic is the combo to get, while if you have a chauffeur, go with the manual and leave all worries.
